The weather in the Algarve

The Algarve has the best all-year round climate in the whole of Europe, and can boast more sunshine hours than California! Especially the East Algarve has the highest average winter temperature in whole of Portugal and even Europe.

With over 100 miles of dramatic cliff faces and extensive golden beaches, the Algarve offers one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world. The Cliffs are mostly found in the west Algarve. The  15km of sandy beaches you will find in the East Algarve.

There is something for everyone, whether you're after a relaxing day at an intimate cove, or waters ports and tourist attractions on busy golden beaches. In general you can say the west Algarve , especially around Albufeira is more touristy. The east Algarve is more relaxed and the place where most Portuguese spent their holidays.

Essential Information about the Algarve

The language spoken throughout the Algarve and Portugal is Portuguese, however, as with most popular tourist destinations around the world, you will find the majority of shops, bars, and restaurants have staff that can speak English. Portuguese is not an easy language to learn! But greatly appreciated by the local people from the Algarve if you try.

 

Currency in Portugal

The legal currency in Portugal and the Algarve changed back in January 2002 from the 'Escudo' to the now widely used 'Euro'. This standardisation has made travelling around Europe a lot easier. In general you could say that the price levels are the same as in north west. Going out for dinner in the Algarve however is a lot cheaper. On average you have a three course meal including a glass of wine for around 20 Euros.

Communicating in the Algarve is just as simple as it is in your home country. Calls can be made from card or coin-operated phones throughout the region, and there is also good network coverage across the country meaning you can use your own mobile phone, assuming it is set up for use abroad. Please pay attention when using your phone in the Algarve as roaming charges are high and especially when using your email!!

The facilities for the disabled have improved hugely throughout the whole Algarve as the tourism has increased, making it easier for everyone to visit. Lifts and ramps have been installed throughout the area for easy access to all areas, and Faro airport caters for all disabilities.
